National Velvet, film en français - Mike Taylor (Mickey Rooney), aventurier et opportuniste, arrive par hasard dans la maison d'une famille anglaise calme. Velvet (Liz Taylor), la plus jeune fille de Brown, qui se sent une passion incontrôlable pour les chevaux remporte un beau spécimen en jouant à la loterie. Taylor la convainc alors de prendre le cheval au Grand National, la plus grande course de l'Angleterre.
